THANGADZI
RIVER CONSERVANCY
The Thangadzi River Conservancy (TRC) is a 750-ha wildlife reserve nestled on Kaombe Sugar Estate. This is the home base of the whole Shire Valley Conservation operation.
THE TRC.
The habitat of the reserve consists of one of the last remaining riparian forest habitats in Malawi. This is defined as a wooded area of land directly adjacent to a body of water. Our bodies of water are the Shire and Thangadzi Rivers. This is a huge privilege and a challenge to conserve one of the last remaining unique ecosystems.
We have identified at least 30 mammals in the park. Some of our more notable species include our resident herd of Buffalo, 10 different antelope species, African Civet, Serval, Side-Striped Jackal and Pangolin. The area is also unique for its abundance of birdlife.
